In a significant relief measure, the Supreme Court has instructed a medical college in Uttarakhand to release the original documents of 91 students that were previously withheld over unpaid fee arrears.

The bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, highlighted the plight of the students, represented by senior lawyer Gaurav Agarwal and advocate Tanvi Dubey, noting that they were unable to proceed with their medical registration or further studies without their original documents.

The court ordered the Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences College in Dehradun to release the documents upon the payment of Rs 7.5 lakh by students who have completed their MBBS and required internships. An undertaking to pay the remaining fee arrears was also mandated. This legal move comes amidst controversies over a retroactive fee hike that left the students in considerable financial distress.
