On World Suicide Prevention Day, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey reflected on New Zealand's alarming suicide statistics and emphasized the need for a stronger national response. "Every death by suicide is a tragedy – one that affects too many families and communities across the country. We must do better," Doocey stated.

He expressed particular concern about rising distress levels among young people, as New Zealand's youth suicide rate remains disturbingly high. While progress has been made in improving the country's suicide prevention and postvention systems, Doocey acknowledged that significant gaps still need to be addressed.

Speaking at an event in Parliament marking World Suicide Prevention Day, Minister Doocey launched a public consultation on the Government’s draft Suicide Prevention Action Plan for 2025-2029. With the current plan ending later this year, this draft outlines refreshed priorities to tackle the evolving challenges of suicide prevention in New Zealand.

The proposed action plan is informed by feedback from affected communities, families, and individuals. Its key focus areas include enhancing access to prevention and postvention support, expanding the workforce to help those at risk, bolstering early intervention efforts, and improving research and data collection to ensure effective solutions.

A small set of targeted actions, each with clear milestones and accountability mechanisms, will guide the plan's implementation, ensuring that responsible agencies can be held accountable.

Doocey urged those affected by suicide and those working in the sector to participate in the consultation process. "Your feedback is crucial to developing a strong approach to preventing suicide in the years to come."

He concluded by reaffirming the Government’s vision of a future where no suicide occurs in New Zealand, noting that while this goal will take time, the next action plan marks a significant step forward in achieving it.
