In a ceremonial event near Warsaw, the Polish Army honored its service dogs, awarding them military ranks in recognition of their critical role in detecting explosives. The newly ranked canines, including a German shepherd, a Dutch shepherd, and two Belgian Malinois, have been part of a program emphasizing the importance of their service.
Gen. Wieslaw Kukula, Chief of the General Staff, initiated the ranking system to honor the hard work and dedication of these dogs. Handlers affixed badges to their dogs' harnesses, symbolizing their new status. The move is seen as a way to acknowledge the dogs as integral members of the armed forces.
The initiative, marking the 80th anniversary of the 2nd Mazovian Engineer Regiment, underlines the deep bond between soldiers and their canine partners. The regiment has a history of deploying dogs in international missions, and the program aims to ensure these loyal companions are duly recognized for their contributions.
