In a significant push towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 240 AL-31FP Aero Engines, which will power the Indian Air Force's Su-30MKI aircraft. The contract, valued at over Rs 26,000 crore, was signed in New Delhi on September 9, 2024, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

These aero engines will be manufactured by HAL's Koraput Division and will play a critical role in maintaining the operational readiness of the Su-30 fleet, a vital component of India’s defence preparedness. Under the terms of the contract, HAL will deliver 30 engines annually, with all 240 engines to be supplied within the next eight years.

The contract is also expected to boost the country's defence manufacturing ecosystem, with HAL collaborating with MSMEs and public and private industries. By the end of the delivery program, HAL aims to achieve up to 63% indigenisation, with an overall average of over 54%, enhancing the indigenous content for the repair and overhaul of these engines.
