Kentucky police resumed their manhunt Sunday morning for a suspected gunman who authorities say opened fire on vehicles traveling along a rural stretch of Interstate 75, injuring seven people.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office said the search had resumed with the help of multiple law enforcement agencies, including a drone equipped with infrared technology. The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. near the small city of London in southeastern Kentucky, when officers responded to reports of gunshots at vehicles on the highway. Shots were fired from an off-highway location, Deputy Gilbert Acciardo of the sheriff's office confirmed.

"When our units arrived, they found several vehicles parked with emergency flashers, windows shot out, and bullet holes visible," Acciardo said, noting that five people sustained gunshot wounds but were in stable condition. Two others were injured in related vehicle accidents. Authorities have identified Joseph Couch, 32, as a person of interest.

The shooting forced the closure of the highway for several hours. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has dispatched agents to assist in the investigation.

This incident occurred just three days after a high school shooting in Winder, Georgia, which left four dead and nine injured.
