Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced that the government might seek a CBI probe into the illegal online trading scam that has rocked the state, should it become necessary.

According to a high-ranking police officer, 59 people have been arrested, 22 look-out circulars issued, and 14 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) established in response to the scam. Reports indicate that many online trading companies operated without proper adherence to SEBI or RBI guidelines, resulting in substantial investor losses. While several traders involved have been nabbed, some remain at large.

Chief Minister Sarma stated that Assam Police has formed Special Investigation Teams to investigate these illegal trading cases. The Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities are also involved, with district police and the CID handling the cases at different levels of jurisdiction. If necessary, the Assam government will recommend a CBI probe, he added.

Regarding the elusive kingpins, Sarma assured that no one can evade the law indefinitely. DGP GP Singh, via multiple posts on social media platform X, mentioned that 28 cases have been registered, along with 59 arrests in 14 districts. The actions have been taken under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act 2019.

A special focus on proper investigation has led to the formation of 14 SITs reporting to a supervision and monitoring group at Assam CID headquarters. Singh also noted that actions are being taken against two police officials for their involvement in these schemes. Lance Naik Saroj Deka has been dismissed from service and Inspector Jitumoni Deka has been suspended.
