Ukraine has announced that 75 nations and international bodies have agreed on a 'shared vision' to ensure the uninterrupted supply of Ukrainian agricultural goods. This move is pivotal for global food security, especially after Russia's 2022 invasion severely impacted supply chains.
According to Ukraine's presidential office, an online meeting followed a peace summit in Switzerland and committed to implementing international law to facilitate agricultural exports. Ukraine, a significant wheat and corn exporter, has faced port attacks since Russia stepped back from a UN-mediated grain shipment deal.
Despite these challenges, re-established logistics through Odesa ports have revived shipments, enabling the export of nearly 70 million metric tons of grain and other agricultural products for the 2023/24 season. However, this is still below pre-invasion levels. Future steps include securing navigation and protecting port infrastructure. Jon Finer, U.S. deputy national security adviser, highlighted Ukraine's resilience and international support.
