Belarus Detains Japanese Spy Amid Concerns Over Military Observations
Belarusian authorities have detained a Japanese intelligence agent accused of monitoring border and military sites. Reports indicate the detainee was gathering information on Belarus's social, economic conditions, and military infrastructure. This is the first known case involving a Japanese national in Belarus for such activities.

Belarusian security forces have apprehended a Japanese intelligence agent suspected of observing border areas and military sites, according to local media reports on Wednesday. The state-owned TV channel Belarus 1 announced the arrest and promised further details to follow.
Reports suggest the detained individual was involved in gathering intelligence on social and economic situations in Belarus, China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative, and the border situation with Ukraine. The individual also reportedly filmed military infrastructure.
Radio Liberty, an American-funded outlet, quoted the television report, stating the man was detained in Gomel. He was previously a Japanese language instructor at a local university and had shown interest in various aspects of Belarusian life. This marks the first time a Japanese national has been implicated in espionage activities in Belarus.
