A tourist submarine near Hurghada, Egypt, sank in the Red Sea, claiming six lives and injuring several others, two municipal officials confirmed on Thursday. Most passengers were Russians eager to witness the region's stunning coral reefs.
Emergency services successfully rescued 38 Russian nationals, according to the Russian consul in Hurghada. Fourteen survivors were hospitalized, and the remaining tourists returned to their accommodation. Russian and Egyptian authorities have yet to determine the cause of the sinking.
Russia's Tass news agency reported that five Russians, including two children, perished in the incident. The Egyptian officials disclosed that six fatalities occurred but could not immediately identify the sixth victim's nationality.
