Uganda’s Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Shot by Security Agents Amid Tensions

Uganda's main opposition leader Bobi Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi, was shot in the leg by security agents in a northern suburb of Kampala on Tuesday, according to his party.

Wine, a musician-turned-politician, came in second in the 2021 presidential election against the long-reigning President Yoweri Museveni. The National Unity Platform (NUP) stated on their social media that security operatives targeted Wine, resulting in a leg injury.

Police said the incident occurred during an attempt to prevent Wine and his team from marching, leading to an altercation. Differing accounts emerged, with police suggesting Wine stumbled, while Wine's team asserted he was shot. A video circulating on social media showed Wine being assisted out of a medical center, visibly in pain. NUP condemned the act as another attempt on Wine's life, amidst ongoing accusations of oppression under Museveni's regime.
