In a significant move, 28 individuals from Barpeta district in Assam were transported to a transit camp in Goalpara after being identified as foreigners by a tribunal, local police confirmed on Tuesday.
The operation, carried out under heavy security, saw heart-wrenching scenes as family members bid a tearful goodbye to their loved ones, who were relocated to the Matia transit camp. The authorities carried out this transfer following a tribunal's order after thorough hearings.
The Matia centre, constructed by the government to detain suspected and declared foreigners, has a capacity to house 3,000 individuals, including 400 females, and is equipped with hospitals, schools, and recreation facilities.
