Pope Francis has begun an ambitious Asia-Pacific tour, starting in Jakarta, Indonesia. The pontiff, who will visit East Timor, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea, aims to address climate change and build interfaith dialogue. Despite his age, the trip is his longest yet, covering nearly 33,000 km over 12 days.
Dozens of excited Indonesians waved on Tuesday at a motorcade carrying Pope Francis through the capital as he embarked on an ambitious Asia-Pacific tour focused on climate action. The 87-year-old pontiff, traveling to East Timor, Singapore, and Papua New Guinea, arrived in a wheelchair at Jakarta airport.
Welcoming him with traditional gestures, Indonesia's religious affairs minister and the Vatican envoy greeted Francis, who then drove off smiling and waving at cheering crowds. Tuesday was reserved for rest after his 13-hour flight from Rome. His extensive journey covers nearly 33,000 km over 12 days, the longest of his tenure.
On the flight to Jakarta, Francis interacted with journalists, hinting at the importance of the trip. Wednesday will see his official address to Indonesia's political leaders. He will also partake in an interfaith meeting at the Istiqlal Mosque on Thursday, reinforcing his message on peace, prosperity, and combating climate change.
