The Ministry of Home Affairs has formed an inter-ministerial team to assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall and floods in Gujarat.

This team will soon visit the flood-affected districts in Gujarat, which suffered due to a deep depression over Rajasthan and Gujarat from August 25 to 30, as per an official statement.

At least 25 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents on August 26 and 27. The statement added that the inter-ministerial central team (IMCT), led by the executive director of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), will assess the damage in Gujarat.

Other states, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, also experienced heavy rainfall. Himachal Pradesh faced multiple spells of heavy rains, cloudbursts, and landslides, causing significant damage this year.

The MHA is in communication with senior officers of these states and will deploy the IMCT there if severe damages are reported, the statement said.

Several states have faced heavy rainfall, floods, cloudbursts, and landslides this monsoon.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the central government is fully committed to aiding affected states, the statement said.

Following a decision by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2019, the MHA has constituted IMCTs this year, which have already assessed damage in Assam, Kerala, Mizoram, and Tripura in advance, without waiting for state government memos.

An IMCT for Nagaland has also been formed and will soon visit the affected areas.

Previously, IMCTs visited disaster-affected states only after receiving a memorandum from the state government.
