Odisha Crime Report: A Grim Overview of 2023

Odisha experienced a significant number of serious crimes in 2023, with 2,826 rape cases and 1,362 murders. The state's home department revealed these figures in a white paper, which also highlighted efforts such as the establishment of a Crime Against Women & Children Wing and dedicated desks in police stations.

A report has revealed that Odisha witnessed at least seven rape cases and three murders daily in 2023. The eastern state saw a total of 2,826 rape cases and 1,362 murders, according to the white paper tabled in the assembly on Friday.

The white paper, distributed by the home department to assembly members, also highlighted the establishment of a dedicated Crime Against Women & Children Wing (CAW & CW) in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, women and children desks have been set up at 619 police stations across the state.

In 2023, the Odisha Police registered 1,868 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, arresting over 2,410 suspects. Meanwhile, 2,348 cyber crimes were reported during the same period, the report added.
