The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized two significant conventions in Udaipur, Rajasthan, and Dharmashala, Himachal Pradesh, marking a crucial step in aligning academic research with the needs of both national and international standardization. These events aim to ensure that India remains a leader in global standards development.

The Udaipur convention, held on 23rd and 24th August 2024, focused on the Civil Engineering discipline and brought together Deans and Heads of Departments (HoDs) from partner institutions. Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, inaugurated the program, emphasizing the essential role of academia in the standardization process. He addressed the challenges faced by BIS, including the sporadic involvement of academia in standardization, the lack of synergy between ongoing research and its relevance to standards, and the need for a strong, unbiased Indian presence in international standardization.

The event in Udaipur served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among top academicians in Civil Engineering, fostering a deeper understanding of the standardization process and its importance.

Simultaneously, a similar convention took place in Dharmashala, H.P., bringing together distinguished academicians from the fields of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. The participants were addressed by Shri Chandan Bahl, Deputy Director General of BIS, along with Dr. Surya Kalyani, Sc-E and Head of the TNMD department. The session included detailed presentations on key Indian Standards and ongoing projects in the Chemical Engineering and Petrochemical departments.

BIS has strengthened its collaboration with 92 educational institutions across India through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). These MoUs recognize academia as a critical and unbiased stakeholder in the national standardization process and pave the way for academic institutions to actively participate in BIS Technical Committees, undertake R&D projects, and contribute to international standardization efforts.

Both conventions featured numerous technical sessions, offering valuable insights into the technical aspects of standardization in the fields of Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Chemistry. These sessions highlighted the importance of aligning research with standardization needs to ensure that India's standards remain at the forefront of global developments.
