EU Mission Aspides Reports No Oil Spill in MV SOUNION Incident
The EU's Aspides mission reported no oil spill from the MV SOUNION tanker, despite claims of a fire and potential leak following projectile attacks by Houthi militants off Yemen's coast. The tanker remains anchored. The situation remains unconfirmed as Reuters couldn't verify the spill or leak.
The European Union's mission in the Red Sea, known as Aspides, stated on Wednesday that there was no oil spill in the vicinity of the MV SOUNION tanker, which was recently targeted off Yemen's coast.
Aspides additionally clarified that the Greek-flagged oil tanker remains anchored and has not been drifting. Contrarily, the Pentagon reported on Tuesday that the tanker was still on fire in the Red Sea and seemed to be leaking oil.
Reuters has been unable to immediately confirm whether a spill or leak had indeed occurred. The MV SOUNION was targeted last week by multiple projectiles near Yemen's port city of Hodeidah. Houthi militants, who control the most populous regions of Yemen, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was in solidarity with Palestinians in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
