The Assam government is preparing to file a legal case against Mahbabul Haque, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. Haque is accused of fraudulently obtaining an OBC certificate from Karimganj district 32 years ago.
The OBC certificate, claimed by Haque to place him among Other Backward Classes, was issued in 1992 but canceled in 1996 after a complaint revealed he was not eligible. The district commissioner failed to act at that time, but the government now intends to proceed with legal action.
Earlier in October, CM Sarma accused the USTM and Haque of causing severe water logging in Guwahati through improper campus maintenance, terming it 'flood jihad.' The university is situated on a hill adjacent to the city.
