NGT Rebukes Authorities Over Groundwater Regulation Confusion in Delhi

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has strongly criticized the Delhi government and related authorities for their failure to identify the responsible body for regulating groundwater extraction.

In a recent hearing on illegal groundwater extraction, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava noted an 'unfortunate situation' where authorities were unclear about their duties. The tribunal directed the Chief Secretary of Delhi to identify the responsible authority and submit a report outlining actions taken against violators.

The confusion among Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and other agencies has led the tribunal to seek clarity and accountability. The case will be reviewed on September 3.
