Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was apprehended as part of a judicial inquiry, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday, dismissing claims of political motives behind the arrest.

Through a post on social media platform X, Macron stressed that freedoms, whether on the internet or in real life, must be exercised within legal boundaries to protect citizens and uphold their fundamental rights.

Durov, 39, was taken into custody at Le Bourget airport outside Paris shortly after arriving on a private jet late Saturday night.
