Heavily-armed Baloch gunmen killed at least 40 people in two separate attacks in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Monday, as insurgent activities intensified in the troubled region bordering Afghanistan.

In the first incident, 23 individuals from Pakistan's Punjab province were killed in Musakhel district after the gunmen offloaded them from buses and identified them by their national ID cards. Assistant Commissioner Najeeb Kakar said around 10 armed men blocked the highway and set several vehicles on fire.

In another attack, 11 people were killed in Kalat, including five civilians and six security personnel. The banned Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility, coinciding with the 18th death anniversary of tribal leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. Government officials condemned the attacks and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
