The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has officially commenced the much-anticipated upgrades to the Murray Park Library in Malvern, Johannesburg. Acting on behalf of the City of Johannesburg's Community Development Department, the JDA is leading this significant redevelopment project.

First established in 1957, Murray Park Library has served as a vital resource for knowledge and community engagement for over six decades. Recognizing its pivotal role in education and community life, the JDA is spearheading a comprehensive project to modernize and revitalize this beloved institution.

“The upgrade of Murray Park Library is part of the Inner City Eastern Gateway Urban Development Framework, demonstrating the City's dedication to improving infrastructure and services for its residents. Once completed, the renovated library will become a beacon of learning and culture for Malvern and its surrounding communities,” the JDA stated.

Siyabonga Genu, the JDA Executive Manager for Project Implementation, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This project reflects our commitment to creating inclusive spaces that foster lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and community cohesion. Through careful design and planning, we aim to deliver a modern, accessible library facility that will be a source of pride for generations to come."

Key Features of the Upgrade

The redevelopment will unfold in two phases. Phase one, slated for the 2024/2025 financial year, will focus on foundational work, including site clearance, retaining wall construction, and foundational preparations. Phase two will involve the construction of a state-of-the-art, two-story library facility spanning approximately 2000m².

The ground floor will house a general library space, a children's study area, meeting rooms, study centers, and essential amenities. The first floor will include a teenage section, an activity center, an e-learning area, and additional facilities. Exterior improvements will feature landscaping, paving, lighting, and parking facilities. Sustainability and accessibility are key components of the upgrade, with plans for solar panels, an enhanced power supply, and facilities for persons with disabilities.

Community Impact

The JDA emphasizes that the upgraded Murray Park Library will serve as a dynamic community hub, providing world-class library and information services to residents of all ages. By offering access to literature, educational resources, and a vibrant space for cultural exchange and lifelong learning, the new library will greatly enrich the lives of the diverse population it serves.
