The Delhi High Court has emphasized the need for Arya Samaj temples to verify the authenticity of witnesses in marriage ceremonies. The directive follows a case where a girl's uncle falsely claimed to be unmarried and solemnized their marriage.
A bench led by Justice Prathiba M Singh mandated that witnesses should include at least one relative or acquaintance from both sides, ensuring those present are genuine and have known the parties for a reasonable time.
The court found the marriage to be void due to the uncle's false affidavit regarding his marital status and instructed the temple to implement stricter verification measures. This move aims to prevent similar incidents and maintain the sanctity of the institution.
