Israel and the Lebanon-based group Hezbollah exchanged messages via intermediaries on Sunday to avoid further escalation, following one of the biggest exchanges of fire between them in 10 months, two diplomats said.
According to the diplomats, the primary message exchanged stated that both sides acknowledged Sunday's intense exchange of bombardments was complete, and neither side wanted to escalate to a full-scale war.
The diplomats, who requested anonymity, underscored the efforts of both parties to maintain a fragile peace and prevent any further hostilities.
