The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday assumed control over the inquiry into alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, during the tenure of its former principal, Sandip Ghosh, officials confirmed.
This step follows directives from the Calcutta High Court, which reassigned the investigation to the CBI from a state-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The CBI swiftly gathered necessary documents from the SIT and re-registered the First Information Report (FIR), an official said. The high court's directive came in response to a petition by ex-deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali, seeking an ED investigation into the financial irregularities during Ghosh's tenure.
The college recently drew media attention due to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor on campus on August 9. The court has instructed the CBI to submit a progress report within three weeks, with a follow-up hearing set for September 17.
