German Chancellor Olaf Scholz disclosed on Wednesday that Ukraine had not informed Berlin prior to its unexpected incursion into Russia on August 6. Speaking alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chisinau, Scholz noted that Berlin was closely monitoring developments related to the military operation, which he anticipates will be confined in both time and area.

Ukraine's leaders have portrayed the incursion as evidence of their military's offensive capabilities and strategic surprise, while Russia pledged to counteract the action. 'Ukraine has prepared its military operation in the Kursk region very secretly and without feedback, which is certainly due to the situation,' Scholz commented, adding that the operation is 'very limited in terms of space and probably also in terms of time.'

In addressing internal criticism, Scholz reaffirmed Germany's role as Ukraine's largest European ally, despite recent controversies over wavering support due to domestic political issues. His coalition government plans to reduce its aid to Ukraine next year, relying on a G7 initiative to loan Ukraine $50 billion. Scholz stated that this plan would significantly bolster Ukraine's support, utilizing proceeds from frozen Russian assets.
