The Supreme Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to undertake a preliminary inquiry into the alleged abduction of a Chandigarh-based dentist, Dr. Dhawan, by local police to prevent his courtroom appearance.
A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah upheld a Punjab and Haryana High Court order to register a First Information Report (FIR) and form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for probing the issue.
The CBI's inquiry will determine if Dr. Dhawan's detention or arrest by Chandigarh Police personnel qualifies as abduction, and if due legal process was followed.
