Philippines Condemns China's Aggressive Actions in South China Sea
The Philippines has criticized China's coast guard for its aggressive actions in the South China Sea, alleging that Chinese vessels rammed and damaged Filipino ships. The altercation occurred near Sabina Shoal during a resupply mission. The US and Japan have also condemned China's actions, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution.
On Tuesday, the Philippines accused China's coast guard of hindering efforts to build confidence in the South China Sea, following allegations that Chinese vessels rammed and damaged Filipino ships.
Speaking from the presidential palace, Alexander Lopez, spokesperson for the Philippines' maritime council, urged China to refrain from aggressive actions and adhere to international law. The recent incident took place near Sabina Shoal, during a resupply mission to two islands occupied by the Philippines in the contested Spratly chain.
In a counter-claim, China accused the Philippine coast guard of acting in an 'unprofessional and dangerous' manner. The US and Japan have also condemned China's actions, describing them as 'dangerous' and 'reckless'. An international tribunal has previously ruled that Beijing's claims over the South China Sea have no legal basis.
