The West Bengal government has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering the safety of women working night shifts, particularly in state-run hospitals. Key measures include designated retiring rooms and the establishment of CCTV-monitored 'safe zones'.

During a press conference held on Saturday, Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, outlined these measures amidst widespread protests by doctors following the alleged rape and murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The scope of the flagship programme 'Rattirer Sathi – Helpers of the Night' will now extend to hostels and other workplaces engaging women at night.

The government will also develop a mobile application featuring alarm devices enabling women to communicate with local police stations during emergencies. Employees in both state and private sectors are encouraged to form two-member women teams to stay updated on each other's activities. Additionally, night police patrols will be enforced, and 'breath analyser tests' will be conducted at medical facilities across Kolkata and other districts.

Bandyopadhyay recommended avoiding night shifts for women wherever possible and ensuring a balanced ratio of male and female security personnel in workplaces. The state aims for swift implementation of these measures to enhance safety and security for women.
