Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on Friday emphasized the force's commitment to transparency in the investigation of the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital.

During a press conference, Goyal acknowledged that, despite adequate security, the police were unprepared for the violent protests outside RG Kar Hospital early on August 15, during which a deputy commissioner was injured.

Goyal confirmed that all evidence, including the videographed post-mortem, has been handed over to the CBI, following Calcutta High Court's orders. He explained that the initial registration of an unnatural death case did not imply any attempt by the police to classify the crime as a suicide, as some reports falsely suggested.

Regarding the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital vandalism, Goyal noted the difficulty in controlling spontaneous protests without leadership. Thus far, 25 individuals have been arrested based on social media responses and feedback on the police's online appeals. Although the protesters vandalized several hospital sections, they did not reach the crime scene on the seminar hall's fourth floor, where the doctor's body was discovered.
