Tension Escalates at Belarus-Ukraine Border Amid Provocation Fears
Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin has warned of a high probability of armed provocations from Ukraine, describing the situation at the border as tense. Despite Ukraine's recent troop movements and allegations of airspace violations, Kyiv denies any hostile intent. Tensions grow as Belarus fortifies its southern border.
Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin issued a stark warning on Friday, citing a high probability of an armed provocation from Ukraine. According to the state-run Belta news agency, Khrenin emphasized that the situation at their shared border remains tense.
Khrenin's comments followed a significant military maneuver by Ukraine, which saw thousands of troops crossing Russia's western border in a surprise move. He noted the substantial presence of Ukrainian armed formations near Belarus, signaling possible preparations for high-profile actions, including involving Belarusian nationalists.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military has not responded to a request for comment. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a staunch supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has warned of potential Ukrainian attacks on Belarus. On Saturday, Belarus announced troop mobilization to its southern border, accusing Ukraine of drone incursions, although Kyiv has denied these allegations.
