Dentist Rides to the Rescue: A Hero on Two Wheels

As firefighters in southern Kosovo prayed for rain to assist in their fight against wildfires in the Sharr Mountains National Park, a young man on a motorbike approached them, stating, 'I am here to help.'

Allmedin Smaili, a 26-year-old dentist from nearby Prizren, has been aiding firefighters for seven days. He helps transport water in backpack waterbags to rapidly extinguish the flames. Smaili, who usually rides with friends in the park, carries up to 50 liters of water, food, and supplies to support the fire brigade.

On Wednesday, Smaili called in reinforcements—three friends—to help with the effort. A NATO peacekeeping mission helicopter also supported by dropping water. Smaili's GoPro footage shows him delivering water swiftly over rough terrain, a feat firefighters greatly appreciate. 'We never imagined he could be so helpful,' said Flamur Hoti, the firefighters' commander.
