In a swift and effective response to a medical emergency at sea, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship, C-428, conducted a crucial Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation on August 9, 2024. The operation involved the evacuation of a 39-year-old crew member from the Marshall Island-flagged vessel Olympia GR, which was navigating the Andaman and Nicobar Islands en route from Haldia to Indonesia.

Details of the Operation:

Emergency Call: On August 8, 2024, at 16:08 hrs, the Master of the MV Olympia GR reported a severe injury onboard to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Port Blair. The crew member had suffered a severe crush injury to his left thumb while working in the engine room.

Response Coordination: Upon receiving the distress call, MRCC Port Blair promptly advised the vessel to head towards Port Blair. Simultaneously, MRCC alerted Indian Coast Guard Search and Rescue units, including both ship and helicopter resources, to be on standby for the MEDEVAC operation.

Deployment of ICG Ship: The ICG ship, C-428, was deployed from Port Blair to execute the MEDEVAC. The ship successfully reached the MV Olympia GR and evacuated the injured crew member.

Hospitalization: After the evacuation, the patient was transported to Port Blair and handed over to GB Pant Hospital for immediate medical care and treatment.
