The Delhi Police have beefed up security at the Bangladesh High Commission following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister and the imminent takeover by an interim government in Bangladesh. Measures have also been tightened at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, anticipating her possible arrival in the national capital, an officer stated.
Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced on Monday that Hasina has stepped down, leading to unconfirmed reports that she might be heading to a city in India. As a precaution, extra barricades have been placed outside the high commission and the number of deployed police personnel has been increased, according to a Delhi Police officer.
Senior police officers including New Delhi district's Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla have visited the high commission to review security arrangements. The country has seen fierce protests against Hasina's government over the past two days, resulting in over 100 casualties, largely due to the controversial quota system reserving 30% of jobs for veterans' families of the 1971 liberation war.
