The Delhi High Court has scheduled a hearing for August 6 regarding a plea over the tragic deaths of a mother and her son, who fell into a waterlogged open drain in Ghazipur. The incident highlights jurisdictional confusion between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
The petitioner, represented by counsel, has moved to include the MCD in the case after initial reports misidentified the responsible party. This comes after back-and-forth claims concerning which agency oversaw the drain's maintenance, leading Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela to demand clarity on the matter.
The unfortunate incident occurred on July 31, during heavy rains, when Tanuja (22) and her son Priyansh (3) drowned in an under-construction open drain. As the case progresses, the plea demands accountability, compensation, and stringent safety protocols for all ongoing drain construction sites in Delhi.
