Khalid Saifi, founder of 'United Against Hate', has escalated his legal battle, seeking relief from the Delhi High Court against his attempted murder charge linked to the February 2020 communal riots.
Representing Saifi, the senior counsel argued that the attempted murder charge under Section 307 of the IPC is unfounded, citing the absence of recovered weapons and lack of evidence tying Saifi to the alleged offences. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri, however, expressed skepticism, referencing witness statements about Saifi's presence and provocative actions during the incident.
The communal clashes of February 2020, which left 53 dead and around 700 injured, erupted following a clash between citizenship law supporters and protesters. Although charges of criminal conspiracy, abetment, and common intention were dropped, Saifi faces multiple serious charges. His counsel maintains there is no credible evidence of his involvement in the violence.
