Qatar and Egypt, acting as mediators in the increasingly fraught ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, issued warnings on Wednesday that the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh could further jeopardize peace efforts in Gaza. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani took to X to question the feasibility of successful mediation when one party engages in political assassinations and targeting civilians during ongoing talks.

Sheikh Mohammed, also serving as foreign minister, stressed that peace requires serious partners and a global stance against such disregard for human life. In a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he reiterated the importance of continuing work towards a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian foreign ministry condemned what it described as a 'dangerous Israeli escalation policy,' arguing that it has undermined efforts to broker peace in Gaza. Qatar, Egypt, and the United States have repeatedly attempted to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but recent violent escalations and stalled negotiations have complicated these efforts.
