In a significant move, China has declared a ban on exporting unregulated civilian drones that could serve military or terrorist purposes. This decision follows heightened Western criticism over China's position in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced the restrictions on Wednesday, highlighting the need to prevent drones from contributing to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Key drone features such as infrared imaging equipment, target-indicating lasers, and high-precision inertial measurement equipment will now be on an export control list.
The new regulations will take effect on September 1. Media and U.S. intelligence reports have previously indicated that Russia has purchased Chinese drones for military use in Ukraine. China is notable for being the fourth-largest arms exporter globally, with significant exports to Pakistan and other states in Asia and Africa, raising concerns among U.S. security officials about the use of Chinese drones within American government departments. DJI Technology Co., a leading Chinese drone manufacturer, remains a major player in the global market.
