Imran Khan Seeks Post-Arrest Bail Amid Terrorism Charges
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has petitioned for post-arrest bail in terrorism cases linked to the May 9 riots last year. His legal team claims the charges are politically motivated, citing lack of evidence. Khan remains in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, facing multiple cases since August last year.
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has approached an Anti-Terrorism Court seeking post-arrest bail in roughly a dozen terrorism cases stemming from last year's May 9 riots.
Khan, aged 71, had his legal team led by lawyer Salman Safdar file the petition. The Lahore High Court had recently dismissed an earlier decision by the Anti-Terrorism Court to grant Khan's physical remand, stating that no case could be pursued against him if he did not lead the protests.
Charging the prosecution with politically motivated attempts, Khan, who was arrested by Punjab police on July 14 after the ATC revoked his pre-arrest bail, argued that he was in National Accountability Bureau custody on May 9, unable to communicate with the outside world. In his plea, Khan referred to social media evidence collected by the police as afterthought, justifying the need for further inquiry. Khan remains imprisoned in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail and is seeking post-arrest bail, despite securing bail in some of his multiple cases.
