A case of attempted murder has been registered against the former husband of a 50-year-old American woman, who was discovered tied to a tree with an iron chain in a forest in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, according to a senior police official on Tuesday.
The case stems from a note written by the woman at a hospital, in which she claims her ex-husband chained her in a forest in Sonurli village. The woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was found by a shepherd on Saturday evening. Her Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address and a photocopy of her U.S. passport were found at the scene. Police say she has been in India for 10 years on an expired visa.
Kayi, who suffers from psychiatric issues, was moved to a hospital in Goa for treatment. Superintendent of Police Saurabh Agrawal said the case was registered based on the woman's note, charging her former husband with attempted murder and other offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigations are ongoing to verify her claims, with police teams in Tamil Nadu and Goa seeking her ex-husband and other relatives.
