The explosion occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the town of Lincoln, located in Madison County. Emergency crews from several police and fire departments rushed to the scene, where they found a man and a woman trapped in the debris.
County spokesperson Samantha Field reported that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was airlifted to a hospital. His condition remains unknown at this time.
A photograph distributed by county officials reveals that little remains of the house beyond its mailbox. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation, with Madison County Sheriff Todd Hood planning a news conference for later Thursday.
