The Internal Security Department (ISD) of Singapore has reported a heightened terrorism threat following the re-escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict on October 7 last year. The developments have notably impacted Singapore, according to ISD statements made on Thursday.

Since November, Yemen-based Houthis have targeted more than 80 commercial vessels, including at least two Singapore-flagged ships. Channel News Asia highlighted these concerning incidents, suggesting an increased regional risk.

The global response to the conflict has been highly emotional, sometimes culminating in violence. Terrorist elements have exploited the situation to pursue their agendas, calling for attacks, as quoted by the agency.

The conflict's escalation began with a significant surprise attack by Hamas on Israel from the Gaza Strip, triggering a reciprocal response of airstrikes and an invasion by Israel.

Additionally, the ISD's Singapore Terrorism Threat Assessment Report 2024 noted a surge in anti-Singapore rhetoric on social media. Regional extremist groups have criticized Singapore's role in Operation Prosperity Guardian and have incited attacks against the country.

The US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian is focused on securing maritime routes through the Red Sea, which has prompted further extremist backlash.

The ISD warned of social media posts advocating for attacks on Singapore, including bomb and rocket strikes, potentially leading to Singapore getting ensnared in regional hostilities.

Terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Al Qaeda have exploited the Israel-Palestine conflict to recruit and call for global support of Palestinians. Hamas leaders have also advocated for attacks on Israel's allies.

While the ISD reported no immediate threat to Singapore, the need for increased vigilance remains, given past terrorist activity by linked militants on Singaporean soil.

Since 2015, 52 self-radicalized individuals, including 40 Singaporeans, have been detained under the Internal Security Act. Islamist terrorism, particularly through ISIS, continues to be a major global threat.
