Prominent Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai will testify in his defense in the landmark national security trial brought under a Beijing-imposed law. Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was arrested in 2020 during a crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Lai faces charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring to publish seditious materials. If convicted, Lai could be sentenced to life in prison. Lai's lawyer, Robert Pang, argued that the evidence was insufficient, asserting the importance of freedom of speech. However, judges Esther Toh, Susana D'Almada Remedios, and Alex Lee ruled that Lai has a case to answer.

The trial, which has lasted over 90 days, is seen as a test of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong. Lai's meetings with former U.S. officials have been highlighted by prosecutors, who claim he sought foreign intervention against Beijing's policies. Six former Apple Daily executives have already pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
