Lula Unveils Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva launched a global alliance against hunger and poverty, aiming to make it a top priority during Brazil's G20 presidency. The initiative seeks to gather international support to combat inequality by 2030, despite current global challenges such as conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced a new global alliance targeting hunger and poverty during an event in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. This initiative is a cornerstone of Brazil's priorities as it leads the G20 group of nations.
'Hunger is not something natural. Hunger is something that requires a political decision,' said Lula at a ministerial meeting designed to lay the groundwork for the alliance. He criticized the persistence of global hunger despite adequate food production capabilities.
The formal launch of the alliance will take place at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19. The initiative aims to mobilize funds and share expertise to support anti-hunger programs, and will be overseen by the Food and Agriculture Organization. Brazil will co-finance the project's costs through 2030.
