Anti-Whaling Activist Paul Watson Detained in Greenland; Faces Extradition to Japan

Paul Watson, a prominent U.S.-Canadian anti-whaling activist, has been detained in Greenland with a potential extradition to Japan on the horizon. Greenland's police disclosed that Japan issued an international warrant for Watson's arrest.

Watson, founder of both the Sea Shepherd activist group and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, was apprehended upon docking his ship in Nuuk. Japan resumed commercial whaling in 2019, citing cultural reasons, despite global conservationist backlash.

Japanese authorities accuse Watson of breaking into a Japanese vessel in 2010, obstructing business, and causing injuries and property damage. Denmark's justice ministry is considering the extradition request. Watson's foundation decries the arrest as politically motivated and urges his release.
