The Government is endorsing the rollout of new speed camera signs for fixed speed cameras, aiming to encourage drivers to monitor their speeds, enhance road safety, and avoid costly speeding tickets, Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced.

“Providing Kiwis with an opportunity to check their speed and slow down in high crash areas where speed cameras are located will avoid speeding tickets and the more tragic consequences of speeding,” said Mr. Brown.

He emphasized that the purpose of speed cameras is to improve safety, not generate revenue. “That’s why they should be sign-posted so Kiwis have a fair warning to slow down and avoid a ticket. It’s the right thing to do.”

Mr. Brown highlighted that speed cameras are a critical tool for targeting drivers who break the law and endanger other New Zealanders. While the Government is investing in road policing and enforcement to improve safety, the primary focus remains on enhancing safety outcomes, not extracting money from drivers.

In 2019, the previous government announced the introduction of speed camera signs but failed to deliver on this promise. The current rollout of these signs has begun and is expected to be completed nationwide by June 2025.

“Our Government is committed to improving road safety by deterring those who break the law and addressing the highest contributing factors to fatal road crashes, including alcohol and drugs,” Mr. Brown added.
