Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, who was previously jailed on charges of large-scale fraud, has been ordered to house arrest by the 235th Garrison Military Court in Moscow. This is a reversal of a prior decision that kept him in jail.

Popov, a former commander of the 58th Guards Combined Arms Army, was arrested in May along with several high-ranking officials, including former Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov. While some officials face bribery charges, Popov's charges relate to extensive fraud.

The decision comes after President Vladimir Putin dismissed Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, amid criticisms related to Russia's military setbacks in Ukraine. The court's sudden change of position on Popov's pretrial detention remains unexplained.
