Seasoned diplomat Vikram Misri, known for his expertise on China, assumed charge as India's new foreign secretary on Monday.

Misri, a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, succeeds Vinay Kwatra at a crucial time for India's foreign policy, characterized by numerous challenges, including strained relations with China following the prolonged eastern Ladakh border dispute.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the appointment, stating, ''Shri Vikram Misri assumed charge as Foreign Secretary today. #TeamMEA extends a warm welcome to Foreign Secretary Misri and wishes him a successful tenure ahead.''

In his previous assignment, Misri served as the deputy national security advisor. He also has the unique experience of being the private secretary to three Indian prime ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.

Misri's tenure as India's ambassador to China from 2019-2021 was marked by heightened tensions after the Galwan Valley clashes. He played a crucial role in diplomatic talks between India and China post-incident. His extensive diplomatic career includes serving as India's ambassador to Spain, Myanmar, and holding key positions in numerous missions including Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium, and Sri Lanka.
