Police in Maharashtra's Thane district have registered a case following the alleged abduction and rape of an 11-year-old girl by two men, an official said on Sunday.

The minor was attacked on the evening of July 12 while walking towards Ambernath railway station. The perpetrators, identifying themselves as friends of her father and grandmother, convinced her to board an autorickshaw with them.

They then directed the auto driver to leave, taking the girl to an abandoned spot where they assaulted her. They also threatened her with severe consequences if she disclosed the incident.

The girl later escaped and informed her family about the crime. Based on her parents' complaint, Ambernath police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. An investigation is currently underway.
