Supreme Court judge Justice K V Viswanathan on Friday highlighted climate change as a serious existential threat, urging the creation of a permanent commission in India akin to NITI Aayog to devise comprehensive solutions.

Supporting his stance, Justice Surya Kant noted that the apex court has repeatedly gone beyond existing laws to curb environmental degradation and expressed hope that the Indian legislature would proactively address the pressing challenges.

Justice Viswanathan emphasized the need for a regulatory framework tailored for India's developmental context, while Justice Sanjay Karol advocated for climate change to be recognized as a distinct branch of law, stressing the significance of public awareness and sustainable practices.
