Dozens of bodies were collected in Gaza City's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood and brought to Al-Ahli Hospital on Friday morning, with civil defense workers continuing to recover the dead from destroyed streets and buildings.

Hospital director Fadel Naem informed The Associated Press that both dead and wounded individuals were brought from Tel al-Hawa less than a day after the hospital resumed operations following an earlier evacuation due to intense fighting.

About 60 bodies have been recovered, including entire families believed to have been killed by artillery fire and aerial bombardment, according to Mahmoud Basal, the director of Civil Defense in Gaza.

"There are homes that we cannot reach, and there are those who were burned inside their homes," Basal said, highlighting that many of the deceased had left nearby shelters after being ordered to evacuate.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the situation in Tel al-Hawa. The scenes echo those in another Gaza City neighborhood, Shuja'iyyah, from where Israel's military has recently withdrawn. Civil defense workers found an additional 60 bodies there on Thursday, with more presumed to be buried under rubble.

The United Nations estimates around 300,000 Palestinians remain in northern Gaza amidst orders to evacuate, with much of the population having left earlier in the conflict. Gaza's 2.3 million residents face widespread hunger while crowded into tent camps.

Israel launched its offensive in Gaza following Hamas' October 7 attack. Since then, Israeli ground operations and bombings have resulted in over 38,300 deaths in Gaza, as per the territory's Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians.

Mediators in Cairo are trying to bridge gaps between Israel and Hamas to broker a cease-fire and hostage release deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed additional talks as US, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators work towards an agreement.

Hamas demands continued negotiations until a permanent cease-fire is achieved, while Netanyahu maintains Israel will not halt its campaign until Hamas is eradicated. Domestic and international pressure mounts on Netanyahu for an agreement to release hostages, with Israeli politicians calling for an investigation into the government's conduct.

Regional escalation risks rise as Israel's soldier was reported killed in northern Israel amidst continued cross-border exchanges with Hezbollah. President Joe Biden expressed disappointment over the ongoing war and emphasized hopes for a cease-fire, noting that both parties have agreed to the broad terms of a deal to pause fighting and free hostages.
